After the WTF reaction, the next question is, “What’s a tuktuk?” That’s usually followed by, “Why Sri Lanka?” First the simple question: a tuktuk is a small, 3-wheeled vehicle found all over the world that is basically a motorcycle with 3 wheels. There is a small cab in front for the driver and a small cabin or cargo area over the rear 2 wheels. Go here tuktukrentals.com to get a lot more info than you probably want.
The second question, why Sri Lanka, is a lot more difficult to answer. The answer that is probably closest to accurate is that we tend to go to places that are off the proverbial beaten track. Sometimes, way, way off the beaten track: Bulgaria, Ukraine, Kazakhstan to name a few. And, actually, Sri Lanka is a lot closer to the beaten track than Cambodia or Laos.
The main reason, though, is probably if you’re going to try tuktuks, Sri Lanka is the place to go. They have taken renting tuktuks to a whole new level. Perusing the tuktukrental.com website makes it sound like you are renting a car from Avis or Hertz. They take care of everything, licenses, insurance, repairs. We just arrive and drive.
Of course, when we first started planning this little adventure we hadn’t planned on the government resigning en masse. Or fuel being scarce. Or whatever. But the unpredictability of these adventures may be the strongest lure. It is for me. You want predictability, go on a cruise. Definitely, do not go with us.
Well, it’s the usual scramble to finally get packed, check-in for the flight and get to the airport. But since this flight doesn’t even leave until after 8 PM tonight, this is kind of a hurry and wait kind of day. Tidy up everything. Check over everything again. And out the door.
BTW, I’ve added a link to our intended route at the top of this page. Click on the Google Earth icon to view. You’ll need either Google Earth to view it or a browser that’s capable of viewing KML files.
