Up and Down the Stelvio – 8/6/12
Aug 7th, 2012 by admin
After a day and night of rain and thunderstorms, we awoke to a beautiful, postcard morning in the Italian Alps. Off to Bormio and the Stelvio.
I’ll post a longer description later but, suffice to say, this was incredible. Up the side of the mountains to the Stelvio Pass with a few cars, RV’s, motorcycles and bikes! I had watched this year’s Giro d’Italia bike race when the raced up the climb that we drove and it looked horribly difficult. Driving it makes me doubt that the riders are actually human. Aliens have taken over pro cycling.
At the bottom of the south side of the Stelvio there is a sign at the first switch back, #36, and a sign at each of the following switchbacks counting own the numbers til you get to the summit. And the north side has close to 50 switchback. And if anything is even more beautiful. Truly worth the effort to get here and when Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear says that “this is the greatest road in the world”, it’s easy to see why.
