La Serinidad – 5/31/2013

To say that the Baja is beautiful is understating the obvious. It is an awesomely beautiful desert situated on a spine of earth that runs south for over a thousand miles from nearly the US border. The peninsula split off the mainland of the North American continent and has it’s own distinct look and feel.
The fact that it’s a peninsula contributes greatly to its character. To the east is the great Gulf of California, home to the great humpback whale nursery. To the west, a long coast of surf, coves and beaches. Between the 2 coasts, the mountainous desert spine. And the road north careens back and forth across the spine through some of the most beautiful mountain canyons in the world.
In places on the west, the land is as barren as the Atacama Desert in South America. And other on the other, eastern coast, the greenery is lush and marches right to the sea. Just as we marvel at s great scene, the road turns and we see the next spectacular mountain, canyon, beach, whatever. It’s no wonder that people love this place so much.
We get about 400 miles up the Baja and the day is giving way to dusk. We’re driving up the east coast and we’re looking for Mulege. There’s a fly-in resort, La Serinidad, there that John has stayed at before. The resort caters to fisherman and has a 4,000 dirt runway to make getting to the resort easier for those who want to fly to their fishing.
We get to the resort just as dusk is turning to night. The restaurant is still serving and so is the bar. We drop our bags in the room and head for the outdoor dining area. We order margaritas made with a half dozen fresh squeezed limes (no chintzy lemon mix here) and a quick dinner.
While we’re eating, a couple at an adjacent table start up a conversation. They’re here to fish and have recently purchased a home just outside of Ensenada. It turns out that they are from San Clemente and their home in California is just a few blocks from John’s home. How they don’t know each other is a mystery.
But tomorrow’s going to be a long day. We may stop in Ensenada but if we’re making good time, we’ll try for San Clemente.
